Originally shot as part of a work for the Studio Museum’s “Harlem Postcards” exhibition, “Boulevard Of…,” cuts a deliciously disruptive path through Harlem as onlookers stare, take photos with their cell phones, and marvel at the strange and elegant bird that has alighted on their drab city streets. Soliciting both cheers, jeers, stares, and abuse, Ericka Aviance pumps her way along 125th, essentially turning it into her own private runway. It was originally inspired by the notion of 125th as the “Champs Elysee of Harlem”. This video work is part of the collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem.
