Artist’s Proofs of “Love… Hate… Nature…”, 2009 Available

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Last Fall, the International Center of Photography (in conjunction with the ICP Triennial) was kind enough to publish my first artist’s book.  Titled “Love…Hate…Nature (Max)”, which essentially represents one of my grid works published, page by page, polaroid by polaroid in an unfolding narrative.

We’re happy to offer a few of the artist’s proofs of the book (limited to 25 and not all are available) through the studio.  We believe that the museum still has some copies as well, tho we’re not sure!  Below is the text used by ICP to describe the book.  If you’re interested in any of the artsit’s proofs, please contact the studio through the contact section of the website.  They’re $95 plus shipping (variable based on country ect…)

“Love… Hate… Nature…” , 2009

By Jeremy Kost

This is Jeremy Kost’s first book and he has chosen as his subject Max and a loving, stuffed tiger. The unguarded intimacy that characterizes Jeremy’s work is portrayed in this series of 62 images taking the viewer on a voyeuristic romp packed with erotic wallop. Jeremy chooses to work with a Polaroid camera, this obsolescent device is less furtive than the digital cameras of more recent vintage, and seems to disarm people with its promise of an immediately tangible picture. Kost enjoys working within the Polaroid’s technical restrictions which limits his control and results in the images marred by uneven luminosity and fuzzy contours.

The book is limited to 150 numbered copies and each includes a signed original inkjet print ( the first in this post).

"I Caught Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (Rainblo)" , 2009

Jeremy Kost collages Polaroids, splintered by jerking disregard for perspectival continuity, to ground the notorious outlandishness of New York’s club kids and drag queens. Marsha, Marsha Monster Mellow That Is… (2010) portrays Marsha Monster Mellow, a Pittsburgh personality, perched upon a utility kitchen sink. The white frames of the Polaroids cut and expand upon bleached details, warping Marsha into a prismatic motley crew of emotion and angles. I Caught Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (Rainblo) (2010) zooms in and out of a trailer park scene, splicing the details. Kost’s experimentation with depth, angles, and quantities of flash reinforces a style of Cubism based in reality, a disjointed yet cohesive standpoint of entire environments. Serving to give us every angle of overstated glamour, the extroverted characters jump from the wall while being mangled by skewed morsels of detail. Kost’s images are otherworldly, pulsating with a scrambled intensity that formulates and contorts reality.
